Serratus Anterior, Pectoralis Major and Minor and the Latissimus Dorsi – Say What Now?????

Are you experiencing continued pain and tightness to your shoulders, neck, and ribs? These three muscles could be the culprits and a good deep tissue massage could be the answer.

The Serratus Anterior causes issues for your shoulder blade as it pulls it forward and glues into onto the rib cage. It can give you pain at the side of your chest, beside your shoulder blade or at the inside of your arm.

The Pectorals are made up of the pectoralis major muscle, which assists in shoulder and arm movement, and the pectoralis minor muscle, which helps the rib cage rise. Tightness of the pectoral muscles can result in back, neck and shoulder pain, and trigger points in the pectorals cause the shoulder blades to pull forward, which results in bad postural alignment. Massaging the pectoral muscles can help reduce tightness and relieve constriction.

The Latissimus Dorsi is one of the largest muscles in your back. It’s sometimes referred to as your ‘lats’ and is known for its large, flat “V” shape. It spans the width of your back and helps control the movement of your shoulders. When your latissimus dorsi is sore, you might feel pain in your low back, mid-to-upper back, along the base of your scapula, or in the back of the shoulder. You may even feel pain along the inside of the arm, all the way down to your fingers.

So, if you have been having general back and shoulder massages but the pain and tightness is still giving you trouble – you may need Neuromuscular therapy to these specific muscles.

When receiving massage to these muscles you may be required to move around the bed at times and also lift your arms in different positions. The massage can still be relaxing, you just need to engage in the process.

If you really want to relieve tightness and pain through the shoulders, arms, chest and rib areas - then this just may be the answer.
